I have the honour to comunicate the following act of piracy committed on board the S. S. "American" between Macao and Hong- -kong on the night of the 26th. ultimo.

The S. S. American" arrived in Macao with treasure, a full cargo of general merchandise, 265 pigs and 101 head of cattle and with 36 passengers on the evening of the 25th. ultimo. She proceeded to discharge early next morning the cargo and treasure addressed to Macao and as is natural there was a great movement of coolies, passeng- -ers etc., during the whole day. At 5 p.m. the vessel had already dis- -charged and was preparing to sail for Hongkong.

At 5.30 p.m. we weighed anchor and under slow speed we cleared the inner harbour into the new channel. At 6.30 p.m. we cleared the last buoy and proceded full steam and speed. About 10 minutes after a sudden rush of 6 armed men (each with 2 revolvers) on the bridge surprised the men on duty and covering all with their revolvers compell- -ød them to keep quiet and obey them in their command even as far as covering the man at the wheel and taking charge of it ordered the man at the wheel to steer South.

Simultaneously 4 armed men rushed into the Compradore's room compelling him to surrender the key of the treasure compartment which the Compradore denied the possession. He was forthwith shot on the left leg and threatening again to shoot and kill him he surrendered the key of his own safe, gold watch and chain. The robbers opened the small safe and extracted from there some $2,500 belonging to the ship. Subsequently they compelled an assistant engine driver to come up from the engine room and guarded by men with revolvers broke open the

cases and 1 bag said to treasure compartment from where they removed contain 822,400 all in subsidiary coin.

Other robbers (said to be 16 in all) rushed the

passengers to the tween decks and the panic stricken crew to the fore-

-castle
